Why does learning to read sometimes prove more challenging than expected?
Reading is a language-based skill, so it's unsurprising that the root of most reading difficulties, including dyslexia, is inadequate proficiency with linguistic systems that underlie word-reading ability.

The key for all learners, and especially those who struggle, is reading instruction that promotes metalinguistic awareness, or an understanding of how language works, because skilled readers rely on their command of language at every level to read accurately, fluently and with understanding.
Using programmes that focus on developing an awareness of language structure related to sounds, words and sentences, I work with learners of all ages to help them successfully acquire the skills and knowledge needed to master reading at its most foundational level.
